What are the different types of acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that happens when hair follicles under the skin become clogged. But did you know that not all acne is made alike? Not only do they differ in appearance, but they actually differ in how you may treat them as well. The six most common types of acne are:
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Papules
- Pustules
- Nodules
- Cysts
What are blackheads?
Best identified as tiny black spots on the skin. Blackheads are small bumps that appear on your skin due to clogged hair follicles. These bumps are called blackheads because the surface looks dark or black. Blackheads are a mild type of acne that usually form on the face.
What are whiteheads?
Best identified as small bumps sticking out from the skin. A whitehead is a type of acne that forms when dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria become trapped within one of your pores. Whiteheads can be annoying, and they may seem to develop at the worst times.
What are papules?
Small red bumps on your skin. A papule is a raised area of skin tissue that’s less than 1 centimeter around. A papule can have distinct or indistinct borders.
What are pustules?
Pimples with a white-colored head that contains pus. A pustule is a bulging patch of skin that’s full of a yellowish fluid called pus. It’s basically a big pimple.
What are nodules?
Large, inflamed bumps that feel firm to the touch. A nodule is a growth of abnormal tissue. Nodules can develop just below the skin. They can also develop in deeper skin tissues or internal organs.
What are cysts?
Large, painful pus filled bumps. Cysts are softer than nodules. A cyst is a sac-like pocket of membranous tissue that contains fluid, air, or other substances. Cysts can grow almost anywhere in your body or under your skin.
