Simply put, laser hair removal is a permanent solution to remove unwanted hairs by using laser technology. Lasers are extremely versatile cosmetic tools that can be used to permanently destroy body hair, allowing patients to forgo shaving indefinitely. How does it work? The laser targets pigmentation in the hair itself and penetrates beneath the skin to precisely destroy individual, active hair follicles. The laser targets only the hair, so the surrounding skin is not damaged in the process. Once the follicle is destroyed, the hair will not regrow. Not all follicles are active at once, however, so multiple treatments are necessary for optimal results.

Both men and women can benefit from laser hair removal. At Ellemes Medical Spa, we provide safe and effective laser hair removal treatments for both light and dark skin individuals. The ideal laser hair removal candidates should be in good health and have reasonable expectations for the treatment. Hair removal is a process that involves several treatments at intervals, and patients will need to commit to multiple sessions in order to get satisfactory results. Only you and your provider can assess your candidacy, and this will be done during your initial consultation to ensure you are eligible for the procedure.

Before the procedure, the hair will be trimmed so it is uniform in length. For best results, patients should be cleanly shaven prior to treatment. The laser will then be optimized for the patient's hair color, thickness, and treatment area.

During the treatment, patients will need to wear eye protection. No anesthesia is required for laser hair removal treatments, as our technique is extremely comfortable. The provider will target the treatment area in one-inch increments until all active hairs have been treated. For the best results, a minimum of 10 laser hair treatments will be needed, spaced four weeks apart for facial hair, and six weeks apart for body hair.

A list of additional frequently asked questions.

1. What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal technology is so advanced that almost any area of the body can be treated. However, the most common areas for treatment are the legs, armpits, bikini area, back, and face. Many patients elect to have multiple areas treated.

2. Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?

Laser hair removal works best on people who have a deep contrast between their skin and hair color. However, darker skinned patients may be eligible for laser hair removal. It is up to you and your provider to determine if laser hair removal is right for you.

3. Can all hair colors be treated?

Very light hair with little pigment, such as gray or white hair, will be almost impossible to treat. Red and blonde hair can also be harder to treat successfully, but during the consultation appointment, one of Emory’s aesthetic team will determine if the laser hair removal process is right for you.

4. Are there risks to laser hair removal?

Though laser hair removal treatments are very safe and do no target the skin, there are always some slight risks to cosmetic treatments. Risks of laser hair removal can include:

• Blistering
• Scarring
• Changes in skin color

5. What is the best age for laser hair removal?

While there is no right age to undergo laser hair removal, older people may have hair that is too light to treat effectively, and young patients may develop more hair growth as they get older. Typically, patients should be at least 18 and have good contrast between the hair and skin tones.

6. Which is better, waxing or laser hair removal?

When comparing the differences between these two hair removal treatments, there are a few things to consider. If permanent hair removal is desired, than laser hair removal is the ideal choice, as waxing is not considered a permanent solution.

As another benefit, laser hair removal is safer than waxing, causes no bleeding, and is quicker to perform. The main benefit of waxing is that it cost much less than laser hair removal to perform. Thus, if cost is the main consideration, than waxing may be the ideal choice.

7. Is there any downtime?

No, laser hair removal generally does not require any real downtime. Immediately after having this procedure performed, your treated skin will be red and swollen; however, this is not permanent and will subside within a few hours post-treatment. Most people are able to return to their everyday activities immediately after treatment.

8. What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects with this treatment are considered minor and may last a maximum of 1 to 3 days. The most common side effects include:

  • Discomfort
  • Swelling
  • Redness

Other possible non-common side effects may include the following:

  • Blistering
  • Herpes simplex (cold sores) outbreaks
  • Infections
  • Scarring
  • Skin lightening or darkening

In time, the skin’s color will return to normal, typically within hours after treatment.

It is also important to follow your skincare provider’s instructions for a safe procedure and treatment. Following both the before-treatment instructions and after-treatment instructions will greatly reduce your risk of side effects.

9. Are follow-up sessions needed?

Follow-up treatments are necessary to get the most out of your laser hair removal treatment. The exact number of maintenance laser treatments varies by individual; however, most people need between four and six laser therapy sessions.

You also need to space these out by six weeks each — this means that the full treatment cycle can take up to nine months depending on the amount of hair.

After each session, you’ll likely notice fewer hairs. Any hair that remains or regenerates will also be lighter in both texture and color. The AAD estimates that the number of hairs will reduce by 10 to 25 percent after your initial session. The rate of reduction thereafter will improve, but will also vary.

Additionally, for the best results, you’ll likely need occasional maintenance sessions. These help ensure that the hair follicles don’t regenerate. Depending on your individual needs, you may need a maintenance session once or twice a year after your full initial round of laser treatment.

The timeline for each session is the same as your initial laser hair removal treatment. Overall, the timing depends on the area of treatment. If you’re touching up just a few small areas during your maintenance sessions, then your appointment may be shorter.

10. Is laser hair removal a permanent solution for hair removal?

Laser hair removal works by heating the hair follicles to stop new hairs from growing. This puts the hair follicles in a state of dormancy for a long period of time — much longer than with shaving and waxing. When the hairs do grow back, they’ll be lighter, finer, and fewer in number.

Although the procedure is often touted as a form of “permanent” hair removal, laser treatment reduces the number of unwanted hairs in a given area. It doesn’t get rid of unwanted hairs completely.

This hair removal option tends to work best in people with light skin tones and darker hair.
