How does the sun affect your skin?

How the sun affects your skin infographic

We all love a gorgeous warm and sunny summer day, but did you know that regular unprotected sun exposure could actually be causing you to age faster?

Unfortunately, this is true. Not only does regular sun exposure increase the risk of getting skin cancer, it also is one of the number one causes of premature aging. These signs include the following:

  • Sun spots
  • Wrinkled skin
  • Inflammation and Hyperpigmentation
  • Thin skin
  • Sagging skin
  • Hair loss

What protects our skin from the sun?

Melanin, from your pigment cells, protect your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV rays). Sunlight causes the skin to produce more melanin, which causes the skin to darken in order to help protect itself. Over time, these darkened cells will eventually fade as they move closer to the surface. This process generally takes 30 days, and is why people notice their tans fading shortly after a beach trip.

Should I avoid the sun?

No, not at all. No one is telling you to bunker down and keep the drapes closed all day every day like a vampire. The sun actually does provide the skin with benefits, such as Vitamin D. Just ensure that you are wearing sunscreen at all times while in direct sunlight to ensure you are blocking off the sun’s harmful UV rays. Too much sun exposure can damage those deeper layers of skin cells, and frequent exposure to the sun’s UV rays is one of the main causes for skin cancer.

What’s the best sunscreen for daily use?

There are a variety of sunscreens out there to choose from, so which one is the best? Honestly, the best sunscreen is one that you feel comfortable wearing every day. You can go out and get the best most expensive sunscreen available, but if you don’t like the texture or the feel on your skin then it isn’t doing it’s job. I personally love the Revision Skincare Intellishade Original, as it not only protects the skin from the sun, but it also has over 20 age-defying ingredients, making it a must have for anyone looking to fight back the signs of premature aging.
