History

On September 23, 1978, the Center for Puppetry Arts opened its doors to the public. The ceremonial ribbon was cut by Kermit the Frog and his creator, Jim Henson. The center was founded by Vincent Anthony, who had a passion for puppetry and wanted to share it with others.

Vincent Anthony, a young Florida puppeteer, began touring with the Nicolo Marionettes in New York City under the guidance of Nicholas Coppola. Vince’s goal was to establish a puppetry center that would become a significant part of the community. They elected to travel to Atlanta to form their own business, The Vagabond Marionettes, with Mitchell Edmonds, with whom he had previously worked at Nicolo.

The Center was founded in 1978 when Anthony secured a permanent home at the former Spring Street Elementary School. They founded a successful traveling group that toured the southeast and performed at Atlanta’s Woodruff Arts Center for numerous seasons. During its initial season, the Center sponsored a puppet exhibition, adult and family shows, and community-based workshops and events that are still going on today.

The center has undergone several expansions over the years and now includes a theater, a museum, and an education center. The theater hosts performances by local, national, and international puppeteers. The museum houses puppets from all over the world, as well as puppet shows and workshops.
