Will Microneedling Help With Acne?

Updated: April 19, 2023

Microneedling is a medical procedure that uses fine needles to create micro channels in the skin to help stimulate collagen production. The process can be applied on various parts of the body, but it is most commonly used for treating acne scars and wrinkles. While microneedling is a popular treatment for helping treat acne scarring, it is not one of the primary treatment methods recommended for improving skin redness or relieving other symptoms associated with acne.

Can You Get Microneedling If You Have Active Acne?

If you have active breakouts during the time of your microneedling treatment, it may be best to hold off until they’ve cleared up before undergoing microneedling treatments for acne scarring. Microneedling will remove a very thin layer of skin and can cause scabs which could prolong healing time if done after a breakout.

As always, talk to your dermatologist or skin care professional about whether microneedling is right for you. You should also discuss any medications that you take regularly because some will interfere with how well micro-needles penetrate into the skin (the needles are designed to go 0.25–0.75 mm below the surface). Be sure to also avoid sun exposure before and after your treatment.

Microneedling For Acne Scars

If you’re considering microneedling for acne scars, be aware that the results will vary from person to person. Most people see an improvement in their skin’s appearance, but some may require multiple treatments for optimal results. Like all medical procedures, there is always a risk of side effects, so make sure you understand what to expect before moving forward.

Acne Treatment Alternatives

If you are suffering from acne breakouts, you’re not alone. Acne is a common skin condition that affects millions of people each year. While microneedling may not be the best treatment option to help with acne, fortunately there are many different acne treatments available, both prescription and over-the-counter.

So what’s the best way to treat your acne? This depends on your individual circumstances, but here are some of the most common acne treatments:

1) Antibiotics or topical Retinoids
2) Over-the-counter skincare products like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid
3) Laser therapy
4) Chemical peels
5) HydraFacials
6) Accutane (a prescription medication)

To determine which acne treatment options are best for you, its best to consult with a licensed skin care professional.
