Hyperpigmentation Treatment Options

hyperpigmentation treatment options illustrationHyperpigmentation is a common skin condition and affects people of all skin types. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces excess melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. This can make spots or patches of skin appear darker than surrounding areas.

Depending on the severity of the condition, cosmetic treatments that may help with hyperpigmentation may include the following:

IPL

To rejuvenate the skin on your body, you can use a IPL photofacial, which uses light pulses to penetrate inside the skin. This constricts your blood vessels and balances your natural skin tone. Photofacial laser treatments also get rid of dark and dull spots on the body and improve collagen levels and elastic fibers.

Chemical peels

There are various types of chemical peels that can help with skin pigmentation. Generally, a chemical peel involves the chemical exfoliation of the layer of damaged skin. The peel then reveals the healthier layer of skin underneath.

Microneedling

Microneedling helps in fighting skin discoloration. In this technique, micro-needles are penetrated through the skin to help eliminate the color. At the same time, anti-oxidants and skin brighteners are infused to make the discoloration vanish.

Microdermabrasion

In a microdermabrasion, a suction device is used to remove not only the dead cells of skin but also exfoliates the discolored skin entirely. When the outer layer of skin is removed the new layer, which has its natural pigment, comes out. This treatment requires a few sessions to help you completely get rid of pigmented skin.

A list of additional frequently asked questions.

1. Am I a candidate of hyperpigmentation removal?

Most likely, yes. You may be a candidate for hyperpigmentation removal if you have dark skin patches or uneven skin tone that bothers you. A thorough skin analysis will be completed in office to determine if you are a candidate for any of the above mentioned treatment options.

2. Do hyperpigmentation treatment options differ based on ethnicity?

Treatment for hyperpigmentation varies, depending on specific forms/types, skin color and ethnicity. Proper skincare regimens and professional-grade skincare products are highly beneficial when addressing hyperpigmentation issues and long-term prevention. Products containing appropriate and specific ingredients to target hyperpigmentation can be very effective at lightening and eventually eliminating patches and spots of discoloration. Melasma can be a little more difficult to treat and because it’s a hormonal issue, treatments may need to be addressed internally as well as topically.

3. How many treatments are usually needed?

Depending on the severity of the discoloration, many clients are happy after just one treatment as it means they can wear less make-up and be more confident as a result. Others require 3 treatments to see a bigger difference. It is hard to predict how many treatments each individual may need, as this depends on how well the skin responds to treatment and levels of compliance with post-treatment protocols.

4. What are the best hyperpigmentation treatments for darker or black skin?

Not every treatment is safe for darker skin types, as some treatments may actually cause more hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones. In addition to a proper skincare routine, hyperpigmentation treatment options that work best for black skin include regular chemical peelsmicroneedling, and HydraFacial.
