How often should you exfoliate? A key part of every effective skincare routine is exfoliation. Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface, and leaves the skin looking more youthful. It also gives the face an instant glow and allows anti-aging products to penetrate the skin more effectively.
Given all the benefits of exfoliation, it may be tempting to exfoliate as much as possible. Unfortunately, that is not ideal, as over-exfoliation can leave the skin sore, bruised, red and irritated. Also, exfoliating every day can strip the skin of its natural oils, which can cause breakouts, which nobody wants.
While there is not a one size fits all as everyone’s skin is different, a good rule of thumb is that you should exfoliate at most two or three times a week. People with oily skin may be able to exfoliate more often, but should be cautious of the signs of over-exfoliation.
