Melasma Treatments

Melasma is a condition that causes brown to gray-brown patches on the skin. The patches usually appear on the face, but can also occur on the neck, chest, back, or arms. Melasma is more common in women and often develops during pregnancy or when taking certain birth control pills. Although melasma is not harmful, it can be difficult to treat and can cause feelings of self-consciousness or embarrassment.

There are many possible causes of melasma, but the exact cause is unknown. Some experts believe that it is caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. Hormones, sun exposure, and certain medications can all trigger an overproduction of melanin.

There is no cure for melasma, but there are treatments that can help to lighten the patches.
