How It Works
What Juvéderm® Does
Juvéderm is a collection of FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers manufactured by Allergan. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body responsible for hydration, plumpness, and structural support in the dermis. As it depletes with age, volume is lost, skin sags, and facial proportions shift.
Juvéderm restores HA directly at the treatment site — adding volume, lifting soft tissue, smoothing folds, and rehydrating the skin from within. Different products in the Juvéderm family are formulated with different viscosities and cross-linking for specific anatomical areas: finer gels for delicate areas like the lips and under eyes, denser gels for structural areas like the cheeks and jawline.
Results are immediate and continue to improve as post-injection swelling resolves over 7–14 days. Most areas last 9–18 months depending on product selection, placement depth, and individual metabolism.
What It Does
The Benefits

Immediate, Visible Results
Volume and lift are visible immediately following injection. Final results — after swelling fully resolves — are visible at the 2-week mark. There is no waiting for collagen to build or for a series of treatments to produce an effect: filler works the same day it's placed.

Reversible & Adjustable
Because Juvéderm is hyaluronic acid-based, it can be partially or fully dissolved with hyaluronidase if a result needs to be corrected or reversed. This built-in safety margin makes HA fillers the most forgiving injectable option available — particularly for first-time filler patients.

Natural-Looking Volume
When placed correctly, HA filler integrates with the surrounding soft tissue and moves naturally with facial expressions. The goal at ELLEMES is always enhancement that reads as looking rested, refreshed, or well-proportioned — not treated. Product selection and placement depth determine how results read.
Treatment Areas
What We Address
Juvéderm's product family covers the full face. Here's what each area involves and which concerns it addresses.
Juvéderm Volbella and Ultra are the most commonly used products for lip enhancement. Volbella is finer and softer — ideal for subtle definition, border refinement, and hydration. Ultra provides more volume for patients seeking a fuller result. Treatment addresses thin lips, asymmetry, flattened lip borders, and age-related volume loss. Most patients start with 1 syringe; additional volume can be added at a follow-up. Results typically last 9–12 months. See our lip filler page for a full breakdown.
Juvéderm Voluma is FDA-approved for midface volume restoration and is the most commonly used product for cheek augmentation. It has a higher G-prime (resistance to compression) making it suited for structural support deep in the dermis or periosteum. Treatment addresses flat or deflated cheeks, loss of midface projection, and the downward shift of facial fat pads that occurs with aging. Typically 1–2 syringes per side. Results last up to 24 months with Voluma.
The tear trough — the hollow between the lower eyelid and cheek — is one of the most complex areas to treat with filler. When done well, it dramatically reduces the appearance of dark circles and hollowing that makes patients look tired. Juvéderm Volbella is commonly used here due to its fine consistency and low water-absorption tendency. Treatment requires precise placement in the correct tissue plane; overfilling or improper technique leads to visible lumping. A conservative approach — typically less than 1 syringe — is safest for under-eye filler.
Nasolabial folds — the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth — deepen with age as midface volume is lost and facial fat descends. Filler can be placed directly in the fold to soften its depth, or in the cheeks to restore the midface support that's causing the fold in the first place. Often both approaches are combined. Juvéderm Ultra Plus or Vollure are commonly used in this area for their balance of support and flexibility. Results typically last 12–18 months.
Jawline and chin filler creates structural definition along the lower face — sharpening a soft jawline, adding chin projection, and balancing facial proportions from a profile view. Juvéderm Volux is the newest and stiffest product in the collection, specifically formulated for jawline and chin definition. It provides the structural support needed to reshape this area effectively. Jawline treatments typically require 2–4 syringes for visible structural definition. Chin augmentation typically requires 1–2 syringes.
Facial balancing treats multiple areas in a single session to address proportion, symmetry, and overall harmony rather than any single isolated concern. A patient might receive cheek filler to restore midface volume, chin filler to lengthen the face, and jawline filler to define the lower third — all in the same appointment. A comprehensive facial balancing treatment typically uses 3–5+ syringes. This approach is most effective when providers assess the face as a whole structure rather than treating individual areas in isolation.
Your Appointment
What to Expect
A filler appointment typically runs 45–60 minutes for a single area and up to 90 minutes for multi-area facial balancing. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
Consultation & Treatment Planning
Your provider reviews your goals, examines your facial anatomy, and discusses which Juvéderm product and placement approach is right for your concerns. Before-and-after photos are taken. If you're new to filler, your provider will discuss realistic expectations, typical syringe counts for your areas of interest, and what the result should look like at 2 weeks once swelling resolves.
Numbing
A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area and allowed to take effect. Most Juvéderm products also contain lidocaine, which provides additional comfort during injection. Numbing is particularly important for lip filler, where the tissue is more sensitive, and for tear trough treatment.
Filler Placement
Filler is injected using a fine needle or blunt-tip cannula depending on the area and provider preference. The provider works methodically across the treatment area, adding product in small increments and assessing symmetry and projection in real time. You'll be able to see your result in the mirror throughout the process and provide feedback.
Post-Injection Assessment
Your provider assesses symmetry, smoothness, and overall result immediately after treatment. Minor adjustments can be made at this point. Post-treatment photos are taken for your record. Your provider reviews aftercare instructions and schedules a 2-week follow-up to assess final results and determine whether any touch-up is needed.
Results & Settling
Results are visible immediately but should not be judged until post-injection swelling has fully resolved — typically at 7–14 days. Bruising, if it occurs, usually resolves within 5–7 days. Final results are assessed at your 2-week follow-up; any touch-up or refinement is addressed at that point. Longevity varies by area: lips typically last 9–12 months, cheeks 18–24 months, and jawline/chin 12–18 months.
Post-Treatment Tips
Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated area for 24 hours. Sleep on your back the first night if possible. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat (saunas, steam rooms) for 24–48 hours to minimize swelling and bruising. Do not schedule dental procedures or facial treatments for 2 weeks post-filler. Arnica supplements or topical arnica can help reduce bruising if started the day before treatment. For full guidance, visit our post-care instructions.

How Often to Treat
Filler is not a one-time treatment. Understanding the maintenance schedule helps you plan realistically for long-term results.
Lip filler metabolizes faster than most other areas due to lip movement and high vascularity. Most patients schedule a touch-up or full retreatment at 9–12 months. Patients who prefer to maintain a specific volume — particularly those who have built up to their ideal result over multiple sessions — often come in before full dissolution.
Cheeks, smile lines, and chin filler typically last 12–18 months depending on the product used and individual metabolism. Patients who top off their filler before it fully dissolves — while some product is still present — tend to require less volume at each touch-up, which is more cost-effective over time.
Juvéderm Voluma for cheeks and Volux for jawline and chin are formulated for longevity — Voluma is FDA-approved for up to 24 months of duration. Deep structural placements in areas with low mobility generally outlast superficial placements, making cheek and jawline filler the longest-lasting options in the filler portfolio.
Filler longevity is also influenced by metabolic rate, exercise habits, and whether the patient is on GLP-1 medications, which may accelerate volume loss. Patients on Medical Weight Loss programs should discuss filler timing and volume expectations with their injector. View all ELLEMES treatments.
How They Compare
Juvéderm vs. Sculptra & Radiesse
Juvéderm, Sculptra, and Radiesse are all injectable volume treatments, but they work through different mechanisms and are suited for different goals. Understanding the difference helps set the right expectations before booking.
Many patients use both — Juvéderm for targeted structural areas and immediate results, and Sculptra or Radiesse for global collagen stimulation and skin quality improvement. Your provider can recommend the right combination during a consultation.
Combine Treatments
Pairs Well With
Filler addresses volume and structure. These treatments extend results to skin quality, muscle movement, and deeper tissue remodeling.
Botox & Dysport
Neuromodulators and filler work on different mechanisms — combining them in the same appointment addresses both muscle-driven lines and volume loss for a more complete result.
Sculptra
Use Sculptra for global collagen stimulation and diffuse volume restoration while Juvéderm addresses specific structural targets like lips, under eyes, and jawline.
Vivace RF Microneedling
Alternate filler with RF microneedling to address both volume and skin quality — Vivace improves texture and tightness while filler restores structural volume.
Kybella
Pair jawline filler with Kybella for patients addressing both submental fat and jawline definition — the combination sharpens the entire lower face profile.
FAQ
Common
Questions
What to know before booking Juvéderm filler in Atlanta at ELLEMES.
It depends on the product and the area. Lip filler typically lasts 9–12 months due to lip movement and vascularity. Cheek and midface filler (Voluma) is FDA-approved for up to 24 months. Smile line and chin filler generally falls in the 12–18 month range. Individual metabolic rate, exercise habits, and lifestyle factors all influence longevity — some patients metabolize filler faster than average.
Most patients find filler tolerable with topical numbing. All Juvéderm products contain lidocaine in the formulation, which provides progressive numbing as the injection proceeds. The lips are the most sensitive area — most patients describe it as a pinching or pressure sensation rather than sharp pain. Cheeks, jawline, and chin are generally well tolerated with minimal discomfort.
Swelling is normal and expected — it is not an indication of how your result will look. Lip filler typically produces the most visible post-injection swelling, peaking at 24–48 hours and resolving within 5–7 days. Bruising is possible at any injection site and typically fades within 5–7 days. Most patients can return to work and social activities the same day, though they should plan accordingly around events. Arnica supplements started the day before treatment can help minimize bruising.
Yes. Because Juvéderm is hyaluronic acid-based, it can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Dissolution is fast — most of the filler is broken down within 24–48 hours — and the area can then be reassessed and, if desired, re-treated. This reversibility is one of the key advantages of HA fillers over biostimulators like Sculptra, which cannot be removed once injected.
Syringe count depends on the area and the degree of correction. Lips typically start at 1 syringe. Cheeks require 1–2 syringes per side. Jawline definition typically requires 2–4 syringes for a visible structural result. Under-eye treatment is conservative — usually less than 1 syringe. Facial balancing across multiple areas typically uses 3–5+ syringes. Your provider will recommend a starting volume at consultation and you can always add more at a follow-up rather than over-treating at the first session.
Both are FDA-approved HA fillers, but they use different cross-linking technologies that affect how the gel integrates with tissue. Juvéderm uses HYLACROSS and VYCROSS technology depending on the product, which produces a smooth gel consistency. Restylane uses NASHA technology, which produces a more particulate gel. In practice, both brands have specific products suited to specific areas, and provider experience and preference often dictate which is selected. At ELLEMES, your provider will recommend the right product for your anatomy and goals.
Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for 1 week before treatment if medically appropriate — these include aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol. Do not get dental work done within 2 weeks before or after filler. Arrive with clean skin. Disclose all current medications including GLP-1 drugs, anticoagulants, and supplements at your consultation. Patients with a history of cold sores should take prophylactic antiviral medication before lip filler.
Yes — patients losing weight on GLP-1 medications may lose facial volume faster than expected, which can affect how long filler lasts and how much volume is needed. Significant weight loss redistributes facial fat, which can change the areas that need treatment. It's important to be at or near your goal weight before committing to a full facial balancing plan — otherwise the results you achieve may shift as your face continues to change. Your provider will discuss timing recommendations based on where you are in your weight loss program.
