The standard answer is 6 to 8 sessions. That’s accurate as a general range, but it’s not particularly helpful when you’re trying to budget your time and money for a treatment series that spans several months. The number of sessions you’ll actually need depends on which area you’re treating, how coarse and dense your hair is, whether hormones are driving the growth, and what “done” means to you — because laser hair removal is permanent reduction, not permanent removal, and the distinction matters.
This post breaks down realistic session counts by treatment area, explains the biology behind why multiple sessions are necessary in the first place, and covers what happens after you’ve completed your series — because the question most patients ask at session 6 is “am I done, or do I need more?”
Why Multiple Sessions Are Required (It’s Not a Sales Tactic)
This is the most important concept in laser hair removal, and understanding it prevents frustration during the treatment process.
Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). The laser can only disable a follicle during the anagen phase — when the hair is actively growing, attached to the follicle, and contains the melanin pigment that absorbs the laser energy. During catagen and telogen, the hair has either detached or is dormant, and the laser can’t effectively reach or damage the follicle.
The share of follicles in active growth varies by body area and individual; 20–30% is not a universal figure. Multiple sessions can target additional hair over time, but a session count cannot prove that every follicle has been treated.
Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart to align with these growth cycles. The interval allows dormant follicles to enter anagen, making them vulnerable to the next treatment. Over the course of 6–8 sessions, the laser targets the vast majority of follicles in the treatment area — each session reducing the total active hair count further.
Many patients need a series, but response and goals differ. A fixed number of visits is not a biological requirement for every person, and improvement after fewer sessions does not by itself show that a provider is misleading you.
Session Count by Treatment Area
Different body areas have different hair growth cycles, different follicle densities, and different hormonal influences — all of which affect how many sessions you’ll need.
Upper lip: 6–8 sessions. Facial hair — particularly in women — is often hormonally influenced, which means the follicles are more persistent and may reactivate after treatment. The hair is typically fine but grows in dense clusters. Most patients see significant thinning by session 3–4 and satisfying reduction by session 6. However, hormonal facial hair is the area most likely to require occasional maintenance sessions down the line, particularly if you experience hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause, PCOS, medication changes).
Chin and jawline: 6–10 sessions. The chin tends to need more sessions than other facial areas because the hair here is often coarser and more deeply rooted, and the hormonal influence is stronger. Women with PCOS or other androgen-related conditions may find this area particularly stubborn. Your provider at ELLEMES will evaluate your hair type and hormonal profile during the consultation to set realistic expectations for this area specifically.
Underarms: 6–8 sessions. Underarm hair responds well to laser treatment because the hair is typically coarse and dark — exactly the type that absorbs laser energy most efficiently. The growth cycle in the underarms is also relatively short, which means sessions spaced 4–5 weeks apart can cycle through the full follicle population efficiently. Most patients see dramatic reduction by session 4, with the remaining sessions catching stragglers and fine hairs.
Bikini and Brazilian: 6–8 sessions. The bikini area has dense, coarse hair that responds well to the laser, but the area is large and the follicle population is high. Brazilian treatment (which covers the full pubic area, front to back) typically requires the full 8 sessions because of the density and the multiple hair growth patterns within the area. Patients who have been waxing for years may find that some follicles have been weakened by the waxing and respond faster to laser, while others remain at full strength.
Legs (half or full): 6–8 sessions. Leg hair has a longer growth cycle than most other body areas — the catagen and telogen phases can last several weeks, which means a larger percentage of follicles are dormant at any given session. This is why leg treatments are typically spaced 6 weeks apart rather than 4. The hair itself is usually a mix of fine and coarse, and reduction is progressive — each session produces noticeably less regrowth than the last.
Back and chest (typically male patients): 6–8 sessions. Male body hair is testosterone-driven, coarse, and dense. It responds well to the laser in terms of individual follicle destruction, but the sheer volume of hair means that each session has more ground to cover and the cumulative reduction takes the full series to become dramatic. Back hair in particular can have varied growth patterns, with some areas cycling faster than others.
Arms (half or full): 6 sessions. Arm hair is often finer than bikini or underarm hair, which means the laser has slightly less melanin to target per follicle. Fine hair generally requires the same number of sessions but may leave behind a light fuzz of very fine, nearly invisible hair that the laser can’t fully eliminate. Most patients find this acceptable — the goal is eliminating the visible, bothersome hair, not achieving absolute zero growth.
What “Done” Actually Means
This is where expectations need to be calibrated honestly, because “done” in laser hair removal doesn’t mean what most patients assume it means.
Motus AY’s FDA clearance describes permanent hair reduction as stable long-term reduction in regrowing hairs measured after a course. It does not establish a universal 70–90% outcome or guarantee no future hair.
After a proposed six-to-eight-session course, assess the actual reduction and whether remaining hair is a suitable target. Some people still shave or need additional treatment; the result should not be promised in advance.
What “done” looks like practically: After your series, you wake up without stubble. You go to the beach without worrying about your bikini line. You don’t think about your underarms before a sleeveless top. The area that used to require daily attention now requires almost none. Occasional fine hairs may appear — you can shave them off in seconds, ignore them, or schedule a maintenance session once or twice a year to clear them.
Maintenance Sessions After the Series
Maintenance may be useful when regrowth occurs, but it is individualized. A touch-up is still a laser procedure with risks; one or two visits per year is not mandatory for every patient.
Non-hormonal areas (legs, underarms, arms, back): These areas typically require the least maintenance. Many patients go 12+ months after their series without needing a touch-up. When regrowth appears, it’s usually fine and sparse — a single session handles it.
Hormones can change growth from existing follicles. Facial or other hormonally influenced hair may require medical assessment and additional treatment, but a six-to-twelve-month schedule does not guarantee clear skin.
The listed Buy 7, Get 1 Free package contains eight appointments. Whether the last appointment is part of an initial course or a later touch-up depends on your response and the clinic’s package terms; it is not necessarily an extra maintenance visit after eight initial sessions.
The Session-by-Session Arc (What to Expect Along the Way)
Session 1: You won’t see dramatic results immediately. The treated hairs will shed over the next 1–3 weeks (they’ll push out of the follicle and fall away — this is often mistaken for new growth). Between sessions 1 and 2, hair will regrow, but you may notice slightly less density than before.
Sessions 2–3: Reduction becomes noticeable. Regrowth between sessions is thinner, patchier, and slower. You’ll start to see areas where hair isn’t coming back at all. This is the stage where most patients begin to feel encouraged about the process.
Sessions 4–5: Significant reduction. Many patients report that they’re shaving far less frequently — perhaps once a week instead of daily. The remaining hair is finer and lighter. The areas that responded fastest are nearly clear.
Sessions 6–8 may be part of the initial plan, but they are not guaranteed final refinement or proof of a 70–90% reduction. Reassess effectiveness and tolerability rather than assuming completion equals a specific outcome.
If more sessions are proposed, ask why, what additional improvement is realistic, and whether remaining hair is suitable for laser. More visits should not be automatically accepted as necessary or dismissed as upselling.
What Laser Hair Removal Won’t Do
It won’t treat light, white, gray, or red hair effectively. The laser targets melanin. Hair without sufficient melanin pigment doesn’t absorb enough laser energy to disable the follicle. If your unwanted hair is very light blonde, gray, white, or true red, laser is not the right technology. Your provider should tell you this upfront — not after you’ve paid for three sessions.
Hormonal conditions can affect growth from existing follicles, and some treated hair can regrow. Laser does not treat the underlying hormonal condition or guarantee destruction of every treated follicle.
Hair cycles make multiple sessions useful, but the fraction in active growth varies. Improvement can occur after one or two sessions; no general article can predict the exact response or required course for everyone.
Hair reduction may help with shaving-related irritation, but it cannot guarantee prevention of all ingrown hairs or improve every existing mark. Chemical peels, Microneedling, and Intimate lightening treatments have separate indications and risks and require their own assessment.
