SkinBetter Science is one of the several medical-grade skincare lines we carry at ELLEMES Medical Spa — alongside Revision Skincare. Both are excellent. They also serve different strengths, and understanding what SkinBetter does differently helps you choose the right products for your specific concerns rather than buying based on brand loyalty or marketing.
What sets SkinBetter apart is its proprietary technologies — particularly AlphaRet, which solved a longstanding problem in skincare chemistry. This guide covers what those technologies are and why they matter, which products address which concerns, how they pair with professional treatments, and how to build a routine that makes sense for your skin. No brand history section, no mission statement recap — just the information you need to decide if these products belong in your routine.
The Three Technologies That Define SkinBetter
SkinBetter Science is built around three proprietary technologies. Understanding these explains why the products perform the way they do and why certain SkinBetter products are better suited to specific concerns than alternatives from other lines.
AlphaRet Technology
This is the technology that put SkinBetter on the map, and it is genuinely innovative — not just marketing language applied to a standard formulation.
The problem AlphaRet solves: retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are two of the most well-studied, effective ingredients in skincare for treating aging, texture, and uneven tone. Retinoids stimulate cell turnover and collagen production. AHAs exfoliate the surface and improve texture and brightness. Both are excellent individually. But using them together has always been problematic — applying a retinoid and an AHA separately causes compounding irritation (redness, peeling, dryness, sensitivity) that makes the combination intolerable for many patients. Dermatologists have traditionally advised using them on alternating nights to avoid this.
What SkinBetter’s scientists did is chemically bond a retinoid to lactic acid (a gentle AHA) into a single, patented molecule. This is not a mixture of retinoid and AHA in the same jar. It is a new molecule in which the two ingredients are connected by multiple chemical bonds. When applied to the skin, those bonds break gradually, releasing the retinoid and the AHA slowly over time rather than all at once. This controlled, gradual release is what eliminates the irritation spike that traditional retinoids and AHAs produce.
The result is a product that delivers the anti-aging and exfoliating benefits of both a retinoid and an AHA — improved fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone, and texture — with little to no irritation. Clinically, SkinBetter’s AlphaRet products produce visible wrinkle reduction in as early as four weeks, and most patients can use them nightly from the start without the weeks-long “retinization” period that traditional retinoids require.
This matters practically because retinoid irritation is the number one reason patients abandon retinoid products before seeing results. AlphaRet removes that barrier.
InterFuse Technology
InterFuse is SkinBetter’s patented delivery system designed to improve the penetration of active ingredients into the skin. The challenge with many skincare actives — peptides, antioxidants, hydrators — is that they are large molecules that have difficulty passing through the skin barrier to reach their target in the dermis. InterFuse technology enhances the delivery of these ingredients past the skin barrier, ensuring they reach the depth where they can actually produce an effect rather than sitting on the surface.
This technology is primarily featured in SkinBetter’s treatment creams — particularly the InterFuse Treatment Cream for face and neck, and the InterFuse Treatment Cream for the eye area. The practical benefit is that products using InterFuse technology deliver their active ingredients more efficiently than products with the same ingredients but conventional delivery systems.
TriHex Technology
TriHex is a blend of peptides and other active ingredients designed to support the skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin — the structural proteins responsible for firmness and elasticity. The peptides in the TriHex blend signal the skin’s fibroblasts (the cells that produce collagen) to increase output, while also helping clear damaged collagen and elastin to make room for new, healthy protein production.
Think of it as a two-part process: clearing out the old, damaged structural proteins and stimulating the production of new ones. This mechanism supports firmer, more resilient skin over time and is featured across several SkinBetter products, particularly the InterFuse line.
Key Products by Concern
Rather than listing every product in the SkinBetter line, here are the products that matter most organized by what they treat — because that is how you should choose products: by your concern, not by browsing a catalog.
Anti-Aging (Fine Lines, Wrinkles, Loss of Firmness)
AlphaRet Overnight Cream. This is SkinBetter’s flagship product and the one we recommend most frequently at ELLEMES for anti-aging. It uses the AlphaRet molecule (retinoid + lactic acid) to improve fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone, and texture. It also contains a peptide blend, vitamins C and E, CoQ10 for antioxidant protection, ceramides and niacinamide for hydration and barrier support, and calming botanicals to minimize redness. Apply nightly to clean, dry skin. Visible results in four weeks. Suitable for most skin types including sensitive skin — the controlled-release mechanism makes this tolerable for patients who have previously been unable to use retinoids.
Intensive AlphaRet Overnight Cream. The same AlphaRet technology with a higher concentration of glycolic acid for enhanced exfoliation and textural improvement. This is the step-up for patients who have been using the standard AlphaRet Overnight Cream successfully and want more aggressive resurfacing. Not a first-time retinoid product — start with the standard version and graduate to Intensive once your skin has adapted.
InterFuse Treatment Cream (Face and Neck). Uses InterFuse delivery technology to deliver peptides, antioxidants, and hydrating ingredients deeper into the skin. Targets firmness, elasticity, and fine lines — particularly in the neck area, which is often neglected in skincare routines and ages visibly. A good complement to AlphaRet for patients who want both retinoid renewal and peptide-driven firming.
Acne, Oily Skin, and Blemish-Prone Skin
AlphaRet Clearing Serum. This adapts the AlphaRet technology specifically for acne-prone and oily skin by adding salicylic acid (a BHA) for pore-clearing and oil regulation. It provides retinoid renewal and exfoliation while addressing breakouts, excess oil, and enlarged pores. For patients with acne who also want anti-aging benefits, this is the product that does both — clearing current breakouts while improving overall texture and tone.
AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads. Individually packaged pads containing a triple-acid blend (glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid) enhanced with AlphaRet. Used two to three times per week to exfoliate, clear pores, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and improve texture. A good complement to the Clearing Serum for patients who need additional exfoliation, or a standalone option for patients who want periodic resurfacing without a nightly retinoid commitment.
Hyperpigmentation and Uneven Tone
Even Tone Correcting Serum. This is SkinBetter’s targeted brightening product — designed specifically for hyperpigmentation, dark spots, melasma, and overall uneven skin tone. It works by inhibiting multiple steps in the melanin production pathway, which means it attacks pigmentation from several angles simultaneously rather than relying on a single brightening ingredient. For patients whose primary concern is dark spots or uneven tone, this is the product to start with. It pairs well with AlphaRet Overnight Cream (the retinoid accelerates cell turnover, which clears pigmented cells faster) and with professional treatments like the VI Peel or BBL.
Antioxidant Protection
Alto Defense Serum. A comprehensive antioxidant serum containing 19 antioxidants — including vitamins C and E, ferulic acid, and multiple additional protective compounds. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental stressors that accelerate aging and damage the skin. Alto Defense is a morning product — applied after cleansing and before sunscreen, it provides a layer of environmental protection throughout the day. For patients who spend time outdoors, live in urban environments, or want to maximize the longevity of their professional treatment results, a daily antioxidant serum is one of the highest-value additions to a routine.
Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum. The upgraded version that adds repair functionality — not just defending against environmental damage but also helping reverse existing damage to improve brightness, reduce redness, and improve overall tone and texture. For patients with visible sun damage or environmental aging, this is the more comprehensive option.
Eye Area
InterFuse Treatment Cream EYE. Uses InterFuse delivery technology to target firmness, fine lines, and hydration around the eye area. Contains peptides delivered through the enhanced penetration system for visible improvement in the eye area’s structural integrity.
EyeMax AlphaRet Overnight Cream. Brings AlphaRet technology to the eye area — a retinoid + AHA formulation optimized for the thin, delicate skin around the eyes. Improves crepiness, puffiness, fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles around the eyes, with visible improvement in as early as four weeks. For maximum eye area results, the morning-evening pairing of InterFuse Eye (AM) and EyeMax AlphaRet (PM) covers both peptide delivery and retinoid renewal.
Hydration and Barrier Repair
Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment. A three-phase moisturizer that addresses hydration at multiple levels — water-based hydration, lipid-based barrier repair, and soothing anti-inflammatory protection. Designed for dry, compromised, or post-procedure skin. This is the moisturizer we recommend most frequently for patients recovering from professional treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, or MOXI laser — it supports healing without irritating sensitized skin.
Hydration Boosting Cream. A lightweight, deeply hydrating moisturizer that uses hyaluronic acid and other moisture-binding ingredients to provide lasting hydration without heaviness. Good for all skin types, including oily and combination, and layers well under sunscreen.
Sun Protection
SunBetter Tone Smart SPF 75 Sunscreen Lotion. A mineral (100% zinc oxide) broad-spectrum sunscreen in a tone-adapting tint that adjusts to a range of skin tones — addressing the white cast problem that makes many mineral sunscreens impractical for daily wear. This is the sunscreen we recommend from the SkinBetter line because it provides high-level protection in a formula that patients will actually wear daily. The tone-adapting technology makes it one of the more cosmetically elegant mineral sunscreens available.
How to Build a SkinBetter Routine
SkinBetter’s approach is intentionally streamlined — you do not need ten products. Two to three well-chosen products can produce significant results. Here is how to build a routine based on your primary concern.
If your primary concern is aging (fine lines, wrinkles, texture): AlphaRet Overnight Cream (PM), Alto Defense Serum (AM), SunBetter SPF (AM). Three products. This addresses retinoid renewal at night, antioxidant protection during the day, and UV defense. Add InterFuse Treatment Cream if firmness and neck aging are also concerns.
If your primary concern is acne and oily skin: AlphaRet Clearing Serum (PM), Alto Defense Serum (AM), SunBetter SPF (AM). Add Exfoliating Peel Pads two to three times per week for additional exfoliation.
If your primary concern is hyperpigmentation: Even Tone Correcting Serum (AM and/or PM), AlphaRet Overnight Cream (PM), Alto Defense Serum (AM), SunBetter SPF (AM). The Even Tone suppresses melanin production, the AlphaRet accelerates turnover of pigmented cells, the Alto Defense protects against environmental triggers, and the SPF prevents UV-triggered melanin overproduction.
If your primary concern is dryness or barrier repair: Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment (AM and PM), Alto Defense Serum (AM), SunBetter SPF (AM). Focus on barrier repair and hydration before introducing any exfoliating or retinoid products. Once the barrier is restored, AlphaRet can be added gradually.
Your provider at ELLEMES can help you identify which combination is right for your specific skin type, concerns, and treatment history. A product that works perfectly for one patient may not be the right choice for another — and the sequence and timing of product introduction matters, particularly for retinoids and exfoliants.
SkinBetter vs. Revision Skincare
We carry both lines at ELLEMES, and patients frequently ask which one is “better.” The honest answer is that they have different strengths, and some patients benefit from products from both lines rather than committing to one brand exclusively.
SkinBetter’s strength is retinoid technology. The AlphaRet molecule is genuinely unique — no other brand offers a retinoid + AHA bonded molecule with the same controlled-release mechanism. If retinoid renewal is central to your treatment plan (which it is for most anti-aging, texture, and tone concerns), SkinBetter’s AlphaRet products are among the best available. The antioxidant range (Alto Defense) is also exceptionally comprehensive.
Revision Skincare’s strength is DEJ technology and specialized treatments. Revision’s approach to targeting the dermal-epidermal junction — the structural layer between the epidermis and dermis — is unique to their line. Products like the DEJ Eye Cream, DEJ Face Cream, and Nectifirm Advanced address specific structural concerns (eyelid hooding, neck firmness, DEJ integrity) that SkinBetter does not target in the same way. Revision also offers Intellishade, one of the best tinted SPF products available for daily wear across a wide range of skin tones.
In practice, many of our patients use AlphaRet from SkinBetter as their nightly retinoid, paired with the DEJ Eye Cream from Revision for the eye area, and Intellishade from Revision as their daily SPF. Your provider can help you build a routine that draws from both lines based on your specific concerns rather than arbitrarily committing to one brand.
How SkinBetter Products Pair with Professional Treatments
Medical-grade skincare and professional treatments are not substitutes for each other — they are complements. The products maintain and extend results between treatments, and the treatments address concerns that topical products alone cannot fully resolve. Here is how SkinBetter products integrate with the treatments offered at ELLEMES.
With chemical peels (VI Peel). AlphaRet Overnight Cream maintains the accelerated cell turnover between peel sessions, extending the brightening and texture improvement. Even Tone Correcting Serum supports ongoing melanin suppression for patients treating pigmentation. Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment supports barrier recovery immediately post-peel. Resume retinoids once the peeling phase is complete and your provider clears you.
With microneedling and RF microneedling. The InterFuse Treatment Cream supports collagen production between sessions. Alto Defense Serum protects the skin from environmental stressors during the healing window. Pause retinoids (AlphaRet) for several days before and after microneedling per your provider’s instructions — the micro-channels increase penetration, and retinoid in open channels can cause irritation.
With BBL. Alto Defense Serum provides antioxidant protection during the healing period. Even Tone Correcting Serum maintains melanin suppression between BBL sessions for patients treating pigmentation. SunBetter SPF is critical — UV protection after BBL is non-negotiable.
With Botox/Dysport. AlphaRet Overnight Cream addresses the textural and tone concerns that neuromodulators do not treat. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles; AlphaRet improves the surface quality of the skin above those wrinkles. Together, they produce a more comprehensive anti-aging result than either alone.
Who Should Not Use SkinBetter Products
SkinBetter products are formulated for broad compatibility, but there are specific situations where certain products are not appropriate.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: AlphaRet contains a retinoid. ACOG generally advises avoiding topical retinoids during pregnancy, and skinbetter’s product guidance calls for physician consultation during pregnancy, lactation, or pregnancy planning. Non-retinoid products are not automatically suitable either; review the exact formulation with your obstetric or treating clinician.
Patients with severely compromised skin barriers should not start with retinoids or exfoliants. Begin with Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment for barrier repair and introduce active products once the barrier has recovered.
Patients currently using prescription retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene, tazarotene) should not layer AlphaRet on top without provider guidance. Discuss with your provider whether to transition from prescription retinoid to AlphaRet or use them on alternating nights.
Purchasing SkinBetter Science Products
SkinBetter Science is a medical-grade line sold exclusively through authorized providers — it is not available at Sephora, Ulta, or standard retail. This distribution model exists because the products contain active ingredient concentrations that benefit from professional guidance regarding product selection, introduction timing, and integration with treatments.
SkinBetter products are available through ELLEMES Medical Spa. If you are already a patient, your provider can recommend the specific products that match your concerns and treatment plan. If you are new to ELLEMES, a skincare consultation is the best starting point — your provider will assess your skin, identify your primary concerns, and recommend products (from SkinBetter, Revision, or both) that will produce the best results for your specific situation.
