SkinBetter Science makes a lot of products, and the line can be confusing to navigate without guidance. This post breaks down the core products in the SkinBetter line — what each one does, the active ingredients and mechanisms that make it work, who benefits most from it, who should skip it, and where it fits in a routine. If you want a broader overview of the brand’s proprietary technologies and how to choose products by concern, start with our Ultimate Guide to SkinBetter Science. This is the product-by-product reference.
All SkinBetter Science products are available through ELLEMES Medical Spa as an authorized provider. They are formulated without parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and dyes, and none are tested on animals.
AlphaRet Overnight Cream
This is SkinBetter’s flagship product and the one we recommend most frequently at ELLEMES. It features the patented AlphaRet molecule — a retinoid chemically bonded to lactic acid (an AHA) into a single compound. The bonded structure breaks down gradually when applied to the skin, releasing both ingredients slowly rather than all at once. This controlled release is what allows the AlphaRet Overnight Cream to deliver retinoid-level results (improved fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone, and texture) with little to no irritation — eliminating the redness, peeling, and sensitivity that cause most patients to abandon traditional retinoids before seeing results.
The formulation also includes a targeted peptide blend for firming, vitamins C and E plus CoQ10 for antioxidant protection, ceramides and niacinamide for hydration and barrier support, and calming botanicals (allantoin, bisabolol, green tea) to reduce redness.
Best for: Patients addressing fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, rough texture, and early to moderate signs of photoaging. This is also the best starting retinoid for patients who have previously been unable to tolerate retinol products — the controlled release mechanism makes it usable for sensitive skin types that react to conventional retinoids.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and sensitive skin: AlphaRet contains a retinoid. ACOG generally advises avoiding topical retinoids during pregnancy; skinbetter advises physician consultation during pregnancy, lactation, or pregnancy planning. Discuss damaged or irritated skin and any existing prescription retinoid with your clinician before use.
How to use: Apply one pump to clean, dry skin as part of the evening routine. Avoid the eye area (use EyeMax AlphaRet for that zone). Wear broad-spectrum SPF daily — the AHA component increases photosensitivity. Can be used nightly from the start for most patients; no gradual introduction needed for the majority of skin types, though your provider may advise otherwise based on your specific history.
Pairs well with: Alto Defense Serum (AM) for antioxidant protection, VI Peel treatments for accelerated results (pause AlphaRet during the peeling phase), Botox/Dysport for comprehensive anti-aging (neuromodulators address dynamic lines, AlphaRet improves surface quality).
Intensive AlphaRet Overnight Cream
The same AlphaRet technology with a higher concentration of glycolic acid — SkinBetter’s strongest glycolic level — for enhanced exfoliation and textural improvement. Where the standard AlphaRet uses lactic acid as the AHA component, the Intensive version adds glycolic acid for more aggressive surface resurfacing. The result is a more pronounced improvement in texture, pore appearance, and stubborn pigmentation, but with a slightly higher potential for sensitivity.
Best for: Patients who have been using the standard AlphaRet Overnight Cream for at least four to eight weeks and want more aggressive results. Patients with significant textural irregularities, deeper wrinkles, or stubborn uneven tone that has plateaued on the standard version.
Not ideal for: A stronger formulation may be poorly tolerated by first-time retinoid users or people with reactive skin or rosacea. Do not assume suitability based on this list; follow the pregnancy and lactation guidance above and review the exact product with your clinician.
How to use: Same application as the standard version — one pump to clean, dry skin in the evening. Some patients alternate between the standard and Intensive versions (Intensive two to three nights per week, standard on other nights) rather than switching entirely. Your provider can guide the transition.
AlphaRet Clearing Serum
This adapts AlphaRet technology specifically for acne-prone and oily skin. The formulation includes salicylic acid (a BHA that is oil-soluble and penetrates pores to dissolve the sebum and cellular debris that cause breakouts) alongside the AlphaRet molecule’s retinoid and AHA components. Additional pore-clearing, hydrating, and soothing ingredients round out the formula.
The value of this product is that it addresses two concerns simultaneously: acne management and anti-aging. Many patients with blemish-prone skin in their late 20s through 40s want retinoid anti-aging benefits but cannot use traditional retinoids because the irritation worsens their breakouts. The Clearing Serum solves this — providing retinoid renewal and pore-clearing in a single product that does not aggravate acne-prone skin.
Best for: Patients with oily skin, enlarged pores, active blemishes, or acne-prone skin who also want anti-aging benefits. Patients who need pore clarity and retinoid renewal in one step.
Not ideal for: Patients with dry or dehydrated skin (the salicylic acid component can be drying). Patients whose primary concern is aging without any acne or oil component — the standard AlphaRet Overnight Cream is more appropriate. Same pregnancy contraindications.
How to use: Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin in the evening. Can be used nightly. Wear SPF daily.
Pairs well with: AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads (two to three times per week for additional exfoliation), HydraFacial treatments for deep pore extraction and hydration between uses, professional chemical peels for accelerated clearing.
AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads
Individually packaged peel pads containing a triple-acid blend — glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid — enhanced with the patented AlphaRet retinoid. Each pad delivers a controlled exfoliating treatment that smooths texture, clears pores, reduces fine line appearance, and improves overall skin clarity.
These are not daily-use products. They are periodic treatments — used two to three times per week — that provide a professional-level exfoliation boost without requiring an in-office visit. The individual packaging makes them convenient for travel and ensures consistent dosing.
Best for: Patients who want periodic exfoliation to complement their nightly routine. Patients with rough texture, dull skin, congested pores, or mild acne. Good for patients who are not ready for a nightly retinoid but want some retinoid exposure at a lower frequency.
Not ideal for: Patients with active irritation, sunburn, or compromised barriers. Patients already using both a nightly retinoid and another exfoliant — adding peel pads on top may cause over-exfoliation. If using multiple exfoliating products, discuss with your provider.
How to use: After cleansing in the evening, wipe one pad across the face avoiding the eye area. Allow to absorb — do not rinse. Follow with moisturizer if needed. Use two to three times per week, not nightly. Wear SPF daily.
EyeMax AlphaRet Overnight Cream
This brings AlphaRet technology to the eye area — a formulation specifically optimized for the thin, delicate skin around the eyes. It uses the same retinoid + AHA bonded molecule in a gentler delivery vehicle, combined with a hydrating complex to support the eye area’s compromised barrier, and antioxidants for environmental protection.
Clinical testing showed significant improvement in the appearance of lines and wrinkles, texture, dark circles, and puffiness in as early as four weeks of nightly use. The fact that it addresses dark circles and puffiness in addition to lines makes it more comprehensive than most eye-area retinoids, which tend to focus only on wrinkles.
Best for: Patients with under-eye crepiness, crow’s feet, early eyelid changes, dark circles (pigmentation-based), and puffiness. Patients who want retinoid benefits extended to the eye area.
Not ideal for: Not clinically tested for use directly on the eyelids. Dark circles caused by volume loss (hollowing under the eye) — this requires a volumizing treatment like PRF/EZ Gel under-eye injections or PRP injections. Same pregnancy contraindications as all AlphaRet products.
How to use: Apply a small amount around the orbital bone (under the eye, outer corner, under the brow) in the evening. For optimal eye area results, pair with InterFuse Treatment Cream EYE in the morning — the combination provides peptide delivery (AM) and retinoid renewal (PM).
Alto Defense Serum
A comprehensive antioxidant serum containing 19 antioxidants — including vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, and numerous additional protective compounds. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals — unstable molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution, blue light, and other environmental stressors that damage collagen, accelerate aging, and contribute to uneven pigmentation.
The 19-antioxidant formulation is not marketing excess — different antioxidants neutralize different types of free radicals and work through different mechanisms. A comprehensive blend provides broader protection than a single-antioxidant product (like a standalone vitamin C serum). The formulation is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and layers well under moisturizer and sunscreen.
Best for: Everyone. An antioxidant serum is one of the highest-value additions to any skincare routine, regardless of age, skin type, or primary concern. Particularly valuable for patients who spend time outdoors, live in urban environments, or want to maximize the longevity of professional treatment results (BBL, chemical peels, microneedling).
How to use: Apply one pump to clean skin in the morning, before moisturizer and sunscreen. This is a morning product — antioxidants provide the most value during daytime when environmental exposure is highest.
Even Tone Correcting Serum
SkinBetter’s targeted brightening product for hyperpigmentation, dark spots, melasma, and uneven skin tone. It works by inhibiting multiple steps in the melanin production pathway — not just one mechanism, but several — which makes it more effective against stubborn pigmentation than single-ingredient brightening products.
Key actives include tranexamic acid (inhibits the plasminogen pathway that triggers melanocyte activation), niacinamide (inhibits melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes), and a patented blend of additional brightening molecules. This multi-pathway approach means the serum attacks pigmentation from several angles simultaneously.
Best for: Patients with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), sun spots, age spots, melasma, or generally uneven skin tone. Works across all Fitzpatrick skin types. Excellent as a daily complement to professional pigmentation treatments like VI Peel or BBL — the serum maintains melanin suppression between sessions.
Not ideal for: Patients whose “dark spots” are actually vascular (red or purple marks from broken capillaries or post-inflammatory erythema) — those do not respond to melanin-suppressing ingredients and require a different approach.
How to use: Apply one pump to clean skin morning and evening, focusing on areas of concern. Can be layered under AlphaRet at night — the combination of melanin suppression (Even Tone) and accelerated cell turnover (AlphaRet) produces faster pigmentation improvement than either alone. Wear SPF daily — UV exposure will undo pigmentation correction.
InterFuse Treatment Cream (Face and Neck)
This uses SkinBetter’s patented InterFuse delivery technology to drive peptides, antioxidants, and hydrating ingredients deeper into the skin than conventional delivery systems allow. The practical effect is that the active ingredients reach the dermis — where collagen and elastin are produced — rather than sitting on the epidermal surface.
The formulation targets firmness, elasticity, and fine lines, with particular attention to the neck and décolletage — areas that age visibly but are routinely neglected in skincare routines. The neck skin is thinner than facial skin, has fewer oil glands, and is subject to constant movement and sun exposure. Treating it with a product designed for enhanced penetration makes the actives more impactful in an area where conventional products often underperform.
Best for: Patients concerned about loss of firmness in the face and neck. Patients with visible neck aging (horizontal lines, crepiness, textural changes). A strong complement to AlphaRet — the retinoid handles cell turnover and surface renewal, the InterFuse cream handles deeper structural support.
Not ideal for: Patients whose primary concern is surface-level texture or pigmentation rather than firmness — Even Tone or AlphaRet may be more appropriate starting points.
How to use: Apply one to two pumps to face and neck morning and evening, after serums and before sunscreen (AM) or as the final step (PM). Massage upward on the neck — gravity works against the neck all day, so application technique should counteract that.
Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment
A three-phase moisturizer designed to address hydration at multiple levels: water-based hydration (humectants that attract and bind moisture), lipid-based barrier repair (ceramides and fatty acids that rebuild the skin’s protective barrier), and soothing anti-inflammatory protection (antioxidants and calming agents that reduce irritation).
This is the moisturizer we reach for most frequently at ELLEMES for post-procedure patients. After chemical peels, microneedling, MOXI laser, or any treatment that temporarily compromises the skin barrier, patients need a moisturizer that supports healing without introducing irritating active ingredients. The Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment does exactly that — deep hydration and barrier repair with no retinoids, no acids, and no exfoliants.
Best for: Patients with dry, dehydrated, or compromised skin. Post-procedure recovery. Patients starting a retinoid for the first time who want robust hydration to counterbalance any initial dryness. Works for all skin types — the lightweight texture is appropriate even for oily and combination skin.
How to use: Apply one to two pumps to face morning and evening after serums and treatment products. Can be used as a standalone moisturizer or layered under a richer cream in very dry conditions.
SunBetter Tone Smart SPF Sunscreen
SkinBetter’s sun protection line uses 100% mineral filters (zinc oxide) for broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. The defining feature is the Tone Smart technology — a tone-adapting tint that adjusts to a range of skin tones on application, addressing the white cast problem that makes most mineral sunscreens impractical for daily wear, especially on medium to darker skin tones.
Available in a lotion format (SPF 75) and a compact format (SPF 68). The lotion provides more coverage and is better suited as the primary daily sunscreen. The compact is designed for reapplication throughout the day — its portability and mess-free application make it practical to reapply over makeup without disrupting the rest of your routine.
Best for: Everyone. Sunscreen is the single most important product in any skincare routine — it prevents the UV damage that causes aging, pigmentation, and skin cancer, and it protects the investment you make in every other product and treatment. The Tone Smart technology makes this one of the more cosmetically elegant mineral options available, which means patients are more likely to actually wear it daily — and a sunscreen only works if you use it consistently.
How to use: Apply the lotion as the final step in the morning routine, after all treatment products and moisturizer. Reapply every two hours during direct sun exposure. Use the compact for midday reapplication. Apply generously to the face, neck, ears, and any other exposed areas.
Pairs well with: Every product and treatment in the SkinBetter line and at ELLEMES. Sunscreen is non-negotiable after BBL, chemical peels, MOXI, and any procedure that increases photosensitivity — which is most of them. Also essential when using AlphaRet products, which contain AHAs that increase sun sensitivity.
Choosing the Right Products for You
You do not need all of these products. SkinBetter’s philosophy — and ours at ELLEMES — is that two to three well-chosen products produce better results than ten poorly matched ones. The right combination depends on your primary concern, your skin type, your treatment history, and what else is already in your routine.
If you are new to SkinBetter, these are the most common starting points we recommend at ELLEMES:
For most patients: AlphaRet Overnight Cream (PM), Alto Defense Serum (AM), SunBetter SPF (AM). Three products that cover retinoid renewal, antioxidant protection, and sun defense — the three highest-impact categories in any routine.
For patients focused on pigmentation: add Even Tone Correcting Serum to the above.
For patients with acne-prone skin: substitute AlphaRet Clearing Serum for the Overnight Cream.
For patients recovering from a procedure: Trio Rebalancing Moisture Treatment and SunBetter SPF until healing is complete, then introduce active products.
Your provider at ELLEMES can assess your skin and recommend the specific combination — and the sequence of introduction — that will produce the best results for your situation.
